It’s one of Auckland’s most prestigious suburbs and home to some of the city’s grandest houses.
Until recently, if you’ve wanted to live in Herne Bay, there’s been little choice other than buying one of those big family homes.
But now Jervois & Lawrence is a new development of apartments* providing luxury living in the heart of Herne Bay, without the hassle of maintaining a large property.
The five-level, 28 apartment building on the corner of Jervois Rd and Lawrence St has been planned for discerning purchasers who want the benefits of residing in the highly sought-after area – such as being close to the city, restaurants, cafes and shops, and even inner city beaches just down the road – plus a premium quality home.

To do that, the developers hired renowned architect Colin Leuschke and his team from Leuschke Group Architects to design the building. Leuschke made the most of the elevated ridgeline position to take advantage of the water views – many of the apartments face north-west and look out over the harbour.
“The views are great, and one minute you can be sitting outside looking at the sea and the next you can be popping across the road to get a coffee, which is going to appeal to a lot of people,” says Leuschke.
Some apartments have generous balconies, while others have elegant “winter rooms” that can be used year-round. Also in the complex are garden apartments with private courtyards and urban-style apartments that face Jervois Rd and enjoy the city-living vibe. There is a range of one, two and three bedroom apartments, plus magnificent penthouses.
To provide ample light and airflow in all the apartments, Leuschke cleverly designed a central atrium that will rise through the core of the building.
“It will bring light into the back of the northern apartments and also allow penetration into the apartments that face onto Jervois Rd,” he explains, adding that the atrium will feature a striking Japanese-style garden for residents to look down on.
Jervois & Lawrence has concrete with stone cladding reflecting the gravitas and stature of the building, as well as its permanence.
“It reflects an attitude of quality that is very important in this well-established and much loved suburb. It is a building that will travel through time well because it is going to be there for a very long time,” Leuschke says.
Continuing that commitment to quality inside, Synergy commissioned interior designer Stewart Harris of Macintosh Harris to work his magic. A Herne Bay local, he usually only works on multi-million dollar homes but was keen to be involved because Jervois & Lawrence is such a high-end project.
Renowned for his sophisticated and elegant interiors, Harris has opted for classic styling such as stunning herringbone floors. Only the best products – right down to light switches – are being used throughout, from Gaggenau appliances in the Italian-inspired kitchen through to Villeroy & Boche porcelain and Hansgrohe tapware in the bathrooms.
All apartments come with storage facilities in the basement with ample car parking for the 28 apartments.
While Jervois & Lawrence does offer a higher density of living than previously seen in the area, done correctly that can offer people who want to downsize from bigger homes in Herne Bay, or move into such a desirable area, choices they haven’t previously had.
“And that doesn’t mean a loss of quality – in fact it is quite the opposite,” says Leuschke. “It can bring a quality of life they just haven’t had access to before.”
